Rant Alert
In 1787, the government decided you were only worth 3/5 of a person. Until 1865 you were a slave, owned like cattle and treated like less. You couldn't vote until 1870. In 1896 the government decided you needed separate facilities, away from others. That lasted, in the legal sense, for 58 more years until Brown v Board of Education in 1954. It took another 10 years for the government to decide you should be equal and passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Until 1967 the government told you who you could or couldn't marry, like you want to do now. And every step of the way there were people fighting the progress, invoking the name of God to support their bigoted views.
