Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker will be stepping down from the bench in early 2011. Walker was the judge who found Proposition 8--the voter-approved 2008 ballot initiative that repealed the right of gay and lesbian families to marry--to be unconstitutional.
Walker, 66, announced his plans to retire in February in a letter to the president, reported Keen News Service on Sept. 30. The article said that Walker plans to relinquish his role as chief judge of the U.S. District Court for Northern California as of Dec. 31, with his official retirement to follow in February. A press release said that Walker plans to "return to the private sector."
