Washington Referendum Signatures Counted

Opponents of a Washington domestic partnership measure granting marriage-like rights and responsibilities to same-sex couples submitted 137,689 signatures seeking a referendum to overturn it, according to a raw count reported by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The secretary of state completed the initial count of the signatures, which were turned in Saturday, and determined the number was 14% more than the minimum 120,577 needed to qualify Referendum 71 for the ballot. However, the signatures still need to be verified, and with an average error rate of 18 percent, it remains unclear whether the referendum will qualify.

The expanded domestic partnership measure is suspended pending the outcome of the signature verification process.
