A law recognizing residents' same-sex marriages performed outside the District goes into effect today.
The D.C. City Council approved the measure 12-1 in May. Former mayor Marion Barry was the only council member to vote against the legislation.
After the bill was passed, several religious leaders made a failed push for a voters' referendum to stop the legislation from going into effect. Congress did not exercise its power to address the bill within a 30-day period of its passage.
