LGBT rights are expected to top the agenda of a 10-day Episcopalian leader summit beginning Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif. Attendees of the Episcopal General Convention are expected to discuss blessings of same-sex marriages and the removal of an informal ban on gay bishops, Episcopal News Service reports.
Bishops from the six states that have legalized same-sex marriage have written a resolution asking for a "generous and flexible" response to gay and lesbian couples wanting to wed.
The last General Convention in 2006 hurriedly adopted Resolution B033, advising the church to "exercise restraint" in ordaining gay bishops. The resolution was pitched at the time as necessary to keep ties with the Anglican Church.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is expected to attend the convention for three days and meet with Integrity, the gay Episcopal caucus.
In 2003, the convention approved the ordination of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the church.
