Gay marriage foes on Calif. campus face recall

Nine of the 15 members of American River College's student association are facing a recall election after voting to support a ballot measure seeking to ban gay marriage.

The vote last month in favor of Proposition 8 sent the suburban Sacramento campus into an uproar, pitting politicized Christian fundamentalists against a more liberal campus faction.

It's the latest instance in which religious tensions have flared on the campus. Last year, a group called the Christian Civilization Club observed Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. Angry Muslim students and others ripped down signs that maligned Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Most of those facing recall on Tuesday and Wednesday are fundamentalist Christian, and three are members of the Mormon church, which is active in the statewide campaign for Proposition 8.
