Vermont Governor Opposes Gay Marriage

"Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas says he's against gay marriage. Douglas says Vermont's civil unions law is good the way it is, and he says the state doesn't need a "divisive" debate on the topic.

"In an editorial board meeting at the Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus on Tuesday, the Republican governor wouldn't say what he'll do if the bill is approved and sent to him for action. He says he won't be pleased if that happens before the Legislature acts on an economic development bill."
Vermont Begins Gay Marriage Hearings

"The Senate Judiciary Committee in Vermont will open five days of hearings on gay marriage legislation today, including a public hearing scheduled for Wednesday evening at the statehouse in Montpelier. While Democratic leaders in the legislature say they have enough votes to pass the legislation, it remains unclear whether they can obtain a veto-proof majority. Governor Jim Douglas, a Republican, has said he opposes the legislation. The senate judiciary committee expects to vote the gay marriage legislation out on Friday."
