In a reversal of its vote last month, the New Hampshire house on Wednesday passed a bill that would extend anti-discrimination protections to transgender individuals. The legislation passed by one vote.
According to BostonHerald.com, the reconsideration was prompted by a passionate appeal from House Speaker Terie Norelli. The house debated for over three hours before it passed the bill with a vote of 188-187, compared to the 181-149 vote against the bill in March.
The bill now moves to the senate.
Republican-led opponents of the legislation to protect transgender individuals in New Hampshire have derided it as “the bathroom bill” and charged that it would create unisex restrooms that invite sexual predators.
Supporters dismiss that argument as a scare tactic.
