"Since God created marriage, only he has the authority to change it," the Reverend Duane Motley told marriage-equality opponents at a rally on Tuesday in Albany, N.Y.
Motley, state senator Ruben Diaz Sr., and Maggie Gallagher of the National Organization for Marriage joined supporters in a rally to protect "traditional marriage" outside the capitol building as the New York state senate considers a marriage-equality bill.
“What God did was he dropped a huge boulder in the path of the same-sex marriage bill yesterday,” Motley said, referring to a flop in power in the state senate earlier this week. Republicans now control the state senate after two Democrats switched party affiliation. Motley is executive director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, the group that sponsored the "Stand 4 Marriage" gathering.
"While some may try to imagine that legalizing homosexual marriage is a civil right, New Yorkers are mindful that religious liberties could erode if homosexual marriage were made legal in New York state," Senator Diaz said.
While NYCF reported a crowd of 2,000, local news outlets estimated "hundreds" of supporters.
