Prop 8 Leader Eyes Assembly Seat

Andrew Pugno, a California attorney and self-identified “Proposition 8 architect,” has filed paperwork with the secretary of state expressing his intention to run for a Sacramento-area assembly seat, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Pugno, 36, seeks to represent the 5th assembly district after Roger Niello, the Republican who currently holds the seat, is termed out next year. The suburban district covers large parts of Sacramento and Placer counties.

In a biography posted on his campaign Web site, Pugno makes repeated references to his role as chief counsel for Prop 8, in which he worked “to fight against the liberal assault on marriage and the family waged by activist judges and liberal attorneys.”

Pugno, a Republican, also casts his candidacy as an effort to rejuvenate California’s economy by aiding small business.

One other Republican and two Democrats also have expressed interest in the seat.
