S.F., L.A. Mayors Criticize DOMA Brief

The mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco on Sunday joined the chorus of voices rising against the new U.S. Department of Justice brief that defends the Defense of Marriage Act, reports the Los Angeles Times.“I think it's a big mistake," San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom said before he and Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa kicked off the L.A. Pride parade in West Hollywood.

On Thursday night, the Department of Justice filed a brief to dismiss a legal challenge to DOMA, the federal law that defines marriage as a union between a man and woman. The action has prompted responses of strong disappointment from gay rights advocates.

Mayor Villaraigosa echoed that concern, although neither he nor Newsom directly criticized President Obama. The mayors are potential rivals for the 2010 Democratic gubernational nomination.
