Tuesday, the Washington, D.C., city council voted 12-1 to pass a bill recognizing out-of-state same-sex marriages in the District. Assuming Mayor Adrian Fenty makes good on his pledge to sign the bill, the battle will now likely move to the U.S. Congress, which has oversight over all bills approved by the District’s city government. Congressional Republicans appear to be gearing up to oppose the District’s right to self-determination.
"Some things are worth fighting for, and this is one of them," Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, the ranking Republican on the subcommittee that oversees the District, told The Washington Post. "I recognize the Democrats are in the majority, but I represent the majority of Americans on this issue."
