Marriage-equality opponents in Maine have filed a formal challenge to the state's new law allowing same-sex couples to marry, the Associated Press reports. The action could lead to a referendum vote on marriage equality in November 2009 or June 2010.
In Maine, a state constitutional provision known as a "people's veto" allows for a possible referendum on legislation, provided enough signatures are collected. Opponents of the marriage-equality law need to collect at least 55,087 signatures, or 10% of the number of votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election, to mount a ballot referendum for statewide vote.
