The Washington D.C. Council approved legislation 12-1 that would recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries.
If approved by Mayor Arian Fenty, a marriage equality supporter, the issue would then go to Congress, which makes the final approval over the the District's laws.
The single vote against the bill was by former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, who was unaware of what he was voting for, making the initial vote 13-0 according to the Washington Post. He then called for a revote when he realized he voted incorrectly.
